Istana Negara

Istana Negara is the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. It is situated on Bukit Petaling along Jalan Syed Putra, encompassing 28 acres. The palace was initially a private residence constructed in 1928 by a prominent Chinese businessman, Chen Wing Yong. During the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, it was converted into a clubhouse for Japanese military banquets. After Japan's surrender, the Selangor state government purchased the building to serve as the official residence of the Sultan of Selangor until 1957, when it was then acquired to become the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The main gate of the palace is adorned with the national emblem and hibiscus motifs. Flanking the main gate are guard posts manned by sentries and mounted guards from the Royal Malay Regiment. Passing through the palace gates, the main driveway is lined with cypress and casuarina trees, with two separate driveways leading to the east and west wings. The grand hall on the east wing is used for official functions, typically opened only during events such as the installation ceremony of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, investiture ceremonies, swearing-in ceremonies of the Prime Minister or the King, and occasionally serves as a banquet hall for diplomatic appointments and receptions. The west wing houses the rulers’ meeting hall, known as the Balai Raja-Raja, which is where the Conference of Rulers is held.

The palace grounds include an 11.34-hectare garden that features a variety of tropical plants, flowers, a swimming pool, and an indoor tennis court. While the interior of the palace is not open to the public, its main gate has become a popular spot for visitors to take photos.
