Bank of Korea Money and Monetary Museum

The Bank of Korea Money and Monetary Museum is located within the Bank of Korea building at 3 Namdaemunno 3-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, and is a great place to learn in detail about the history of currency. The bank building was designed by Japanese architect Kingo Tatsuno and is one of the few remaining early 20th-century modern structures in Seoul. It has been designated as a “historic landmark” and is under protection. The building suffered a fire in 1945 and was damaged again during the Korean War, but was later restored in 1989. The Money and Monetary Museum was established here in 2001 and has attracted numerous visitors.

The Bank of Korea Money and Monetary Museum houses a total of over 3,500 exhibits, including ancient currencies, currently circulating currencies, and commemorative coins, displayed on the first and second floors. The first-floor exhibition rooms focus on showcasing a wide variety of currencies from around the world, allowing visitors to explore the development of money from ancient times up to the birth of modern currency. The exhibit also includes a large collection of unique forms of money, such as “arrow coins” that were used as regular currency but could be repurposed as arrowheads in times of crisis.

The second-floor exhibition rooms feature not only an experience space for children but also a World Currency Room displaying currencies from more than 170 countries. Visitors can see money from all over the world, which vary greatly in material, design, and size.
