Myeongdong Shopping Street

Location: Myeongdong Shopping Street covers an area of 0.44 km², with a permanent population of 5,000. Its daily floating population exceeds 2 million, and it receives over 4 million foreign tourists annually. In March 2000, it was designated as a special tourism district by the government.

Commerce: Myeongdong is essentially a stretch of street, about 1.5 km long, lined with department stores, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and theaters. It also features a number of ultra-modern large shopping complexes and malls, tourist hotels, and financial institutions. The headquarters of major department stores such as Lotte Department Store and Shinsegae Department Store are located here, forming a large-scale shopping, leisure, and entertainment district.

Features: Myeongdong Shopping Street preserves well-preserved Korean cultural heritage buildings such as the Chinese Embassy and Myeongdong Cathedral, along with ultra-modern large shopping malls, tourist hotels, over 100 financial institutions, and thousands of clothing and fashion specialty shops.

History: This area of Myeongdong was a typical residential district during the Joseon Dynasty. In modern times, the government invited British engineers to design and build European-style houses and streets, quickly making Myeongdong a symbol of the encounter between Korean culture and Western civilization. The history of Myeongdong truly becoming a fashion hub began in the 1960s.
