Matsue City

Matsue City is located on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji in the northern part of Shimane Prefecture, Japan. It serves as the prefectural capital of Shimane and is also the least populous prefectural capital in all of Japan. Since the main urban area is situated along both sides of the Ohashi River, which connects Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi, it is also known as the "City of Water." Additionally, it is famous for its Izumo culture.

The lake and sky are dyed in astonishing colors by the setting sun, while gentle ripples shimmer across the breeze-kissed water surface—this is Lake Shinji. Dense forests surround Matsue Castle, presenting a serene and tranquil atmosphere, and the crisscrossing quiet canals bring peace and calm to the citizens. As the birthplace of ancient Izumo culture, the city boasts numerous vestiges of its former prosperity, as well as unique cultural heritage such as medieval and early modern castle ruins. In 1951, Matsue City was designated as an International Cultural Tourism City under the Constitution. Matsue Castle is one of the few remaining original Japanese castles and is also one of the rare ones built primarily from wood rather than concrete. In addition to Matsue Castle, visitors can explore Lake Nakaumi, Daikon Island, Matsue English Garden, Tsukiyama Temple, Kumano Taisha Shrine, and Sada Shrine.

Matsue’s hot springs are also very well-known. After enjoying the beautiful scenery, soaking in a comfortable hot spring is a great option. Choices include Yuushien Onsen, Matsue Lake Shinji Onsen, Mitarai Onsen, Kumano Onsen, or Kounbu Onsen.
