Top 10 Japanese Hot Springs Most Loved by Young People in 2017

Whenever the temperature drops sharply, it makes people want to jump into a steaming hot spring to relax. According to statistics from the well-known booking website Rakuten Travel, hot spring destinations that offer special student discount packages are particularly popular among youths aged 18 to 23. Among them, the number one spot, Dogo Onsen in Shimane Prefecture, successfully attracted student groups by launching a student travel package, achieving a growth rate of 61.9% compared to the same period the previous year. Following closely is Noboribetsu Onsen in Hokkaido, which offers free shuttle buses, while Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, where visitors can enjoy the traditional “Yumomi dance show,” admire the illuminated “Yubatake” at night, and go skiing to their heart’s content, secured third place.

Ranked #1, Shimane Prefecture’s Tamatsukuri Onsen is famed as a “beauty-enhancing hot spring.” With the added appeal of nearby famous power spots such as Izumo Taisha and Yaegaki Shrine, it regularly attracts many female visitors. To further boost student group visits, a “Student Travel Support Plan” is currently being offered until March 31, providing customized services for students.
Second place – Thoughtful shuttle bus service makes “Noboribetsu Onsen” popular among younger travelers
Ranked #2, Hokkaido’s Noboribetsu Onsen is especially well-liked by male group travelers, with male visitor numbers increasing 2.3 times compared to last year. Many ryokan in the area offer free shuttle bus services from Sapporo Station and New Chitose Airport, specifically for students, making it highly favored among young people.

Loved by both male and female group travelers, Gunma Prefecture’s Kusatsu Onsen ranks third. In addition to its high-quality waters, visitors can enjoy the traditional “Yumomi Dance Show” at the attraction “Yubatake.” The famous “Yumomi Well” is popular both during the day when the spring water gushes out, and at night when it’s beautifully illuminated. Ryokan in the area also offer a wide range of recreational facilities, including karaoke, allowing guests to fully relax. Nearby, the scenic Kusatsu International Ski Area attracts many young skiers.
