Many people hear about the Chugoku region of Japan and wonder what this new destination is. In fact, it is an area composed of five prefectures in the southwestern part of Honshu Island: Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Tottori, and Shimane. In this lesser-known hidden gem, it is actually a “homeland” rich in traditional Japanese culture. Especially when the delicate pink Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms sway in the spring breeze, they adorn the historic landmarks with extraordinary vibrancy.
The Chugoku region is bordered by the Sea of Japan to the north and faces the fish-rich Seto Inland Sea to the south. With its warm climate and abundant cultural resources, the area enjoys plentiful produce, and each prefecture has its famous specialties — including oysters and conger eels from Hiroshima Prefecture; white peaches and grapes from Okayama Prefecture; Ogi-yaki pottery, sea urchins, and Iwakuni sushi from Yamaguchi Prefecture; 20th Century pears and watermelons from Tottori Prefecture; and snow crabs, Izumo soba noodles, and wine from Shimane Prefecture. Beyond seasonal delicacies, hot spring experiences, and quaint cultural traditions, the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori Prefecture are a must-visit for a geological adventure. Facing the Sea of Japan, the Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan’s largest, showcasing completely different beauty throughout the seasons. To experience the dunes from a unique perspective, you can ride a camel or take a sightseeing carriage to admire nature’s masterpiece. Tottori Prefecture has long been steeped in myths and legends, and spring is also a prime time for cherry blossom viewing, with highlights including Kusumoto Park and the areas along the Fuefuki River. Strolling along the riverbank and admiring the spring cherry blossoms is particularly enchanting.
Tottori Prefecture is also a paradise for many anime and manga fans. It is not only the home of GeGeGe no Kitaro but also the birthplace of Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan. A variety of well-developed themed attractions allow visitors of all ages to immerse themselves and have a blast. Since 2005, Tottori has established the 1.4-kilometer-long Conan Street, featuring 30 Conan statues for fans to discover. Additionally, the Goshodo Aoyama Museum showcases many magical props and scientific gadgets from the cartoons, letting fans relive the thrill of solving cases from the original series.
And Okayama Prefecture is no less impressive. In addition to being associated with the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi and the folk hero Momotaro, it also boasts the “Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter,” which rivals Otaru in charm. Classical architecture accented with cherry blossoms in spring creates an elegance and allure that is even more captivating. Located at the southern tip of Honshu Island, Okayama enjoys a bright and warm climate thanks to the tempering influence of the Seto Inland Sea currents, earning it the reputation of the “Kingdom of Sunny Skies.” The top cherry blossom spot in Okayama is Korakuen Park, where over 5,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom together in spring. The overwhelming beauty, whether viewed from afar or up close, is mesmerizing, complemented by the majestic walls of Tsuyama Castle, creating a richly traditional Japanese atmosphere.
Ranked alongside Kairakuen Garden in Mito and Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Okayama Korakuen is a representative daimyo garden from the Edo period. With a history of 300 years, the expansive Korakuen is surrounded by waterways. Upon entering through the main gate, you are greeted by the view of Okayama Castle in the background. The first impression is of vast green lawns, and the garden paths are thoughtfully laid out. Notably, there is a winding stream landscape encircling the grass, drawing water from the Asahi River, which connects pools, hills, and tea houses into a harmonious flow. Visiting in spring during the cherry blossom season allows you to experience the exceptional charm of this renowned garden.
