Spring Cherry Blossoms in Bloom～A Japanese Adventure Through San’in and San’yō, Embracing the Seasonal Charm of Traditional Japan

Fuefukigawa Embankment in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture—located in the San’in area—is one of Japan’s “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots.” With around a 2-kilometer-long path lined with cherry trees, thousands of blossoms bloom simultaneously in spring. A sea of pink petals forms a tunnel of cherry blooms, swaying gently in the breeze as if to welcome visitors and share a romantic moment together.

The origin of Japan’s founding mythology lies in the Izumo region, which is renowned as the “Land of the Gods” and the “Land of Mythology.” The famous Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine is dedicated to Ōkuninushi-no-Kami, the ruler of all deities. With its grand ancient architectural complex and Japan’s largest torii gate, the shrine exudes a serene and majestic atmosphere, attracting countless worshippers and tourists every year.

In the highly anticipated “Kagura Hall,” the massive 5-ton straw rope known as the shimenawa is a symbol of Izumo Taisha. Legend says that if you stand beneath the shimenawa and toss a coin upward, successfully lodging it in the gap between the ropes will bring you good fortune in love. Those seeking romance shouldn’t miss trying their luck here.

When traveling to Hiroshima Prefecture in the San’yō region, the first must-visit destination is the world-famous Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on the tidal flats of the Seto Inland Sea, the shrine’s iconic red torii gate standing in the sea is not only one of Japan’s Three Great Views but also a landmark of Miyajima. The shrine’s palace-style architecture embodies the essence of Heian-period noble residences. Strolling through the grounds allows you to experience the elegant yet dignified atmosphere of Japan’s Heian era.

Okayama Prefecture’s Tsuyama Castle was abolished in the 6th year of the Meiji era (1873), leaving behind only its 45-meter-high stone walls. The site is now Tsuyama Castle Park, a rare and beautiful cherry blossom spot in western Japan. During the blooming season, thousands of cherry trees flourish, and the view of the flower sea stretching out from the stone walls is truly spectacular—evoking the sentiment in Matsuo Bashō’s haiku “Cherry Blossoms”: “Behold the cherry blooms / Stirring memories of old / In this fleeting grace.”

The journey through San’in and San’yō can be refreshed at Mitsuzawa Onsen, which helps wash away the fatigue of travel. The hot spring water, rich in radium, is especially beneficial for the immune and respiratory systems, and is famously known as the “Healer’s Hot Spring” in the San’in region.

Staying at the Yamanouchirou Ryokan at Mitsuzawa Onsen allows you to enjoy the hotel’s mountain-view hot spring baths and savor traditional kaiseki multi-course meals. After dinner, change into a yukata and stroll through the charming old hot spring town with your wooden geta clogs clicking on the path. The area is filled with quaint sights such as vintage barbershops, sake breweries, tofu sculpture artisans, and hot spring lodgings. In the middle of the old street stands a statue of the Medicine Buddha, as if guarding the local springs and blessing both residents and travelers. Meanwhile, the circular footbath hot spring center offers drinkable spring water—one sip invigorates the whole body and fills you with renewed energy.
