Hamada City is a city located in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. It was once the center of the Iwami Province and is now a major city in western Shimane Prefecture. Along with Yasugi City and Ota City, it is known as one of the "Iwami Sanden" (three Hamadas of Iwami), and is home to Shimane University.

Hamada City is a major fishing center in the San'in region, with multiple fishing ports under its jurisdiction, including Hamada Fishing Port, Karatsu Fishing Port, Tsuga Fishing Port, Orei Fishing Port, Imaura Fishing Port, Fukura Fishing Port, Furumi Fishing Port, and Suzu Fishing Port. The city’s specialty products include Rikyu Manju (sweet buns), Ishikawa washi (traditional paper), Iwami Kagura masks, Akaten (red glaze pottery), and Aka Ringo (red pears). Tourist attractions include Iwami Dateura, Hamada Castle Ruins, Asahi Onsen, Hamada City World Children's Art Museum, Iwami Adachi Art Museum, Hamada City Local History Museum, Shimane Prefectural Iwami Seaside Park, Shimane Prefectural Shimane Aquarium, Hamada Ocean Bridge, remnants of the former Japanese National Railways Imabuku Line, Shimane Fish Center, and Kokufu Beach. Festivals include Iwami Kagura, the Hamako Spring Festival held on the fourth Sunday of April, and the Hamako Summer Festival on the first Saturday of August.
