Daisen

Daisen is a stratovolcano and complex volcano that spans across multiple locations in the Chūgoku region of Japan, including Daisen Town, Hōki Town, Efu Town, Kōnan Town, Yonago City, Kurayoshi City, Kitahiyama Town, and Maniwa City in Okayama Prefecture. At an elevation of 1,792 meters, it is the highest peak in the Chūgoku region. The mountain stretches approximately 40 kilometers from east to west and about 35 kilometers from north to south, with a total area exceeding 120 square kilometers. It has been designated as part of Daisen-Oki National Park by the Japanese government.

Daisen is one of Japan’s One Hundred Famous Mountains, featuring distinct characteristics and scenic areas on its different sides, each with its own name. For instance, the western slope of Daisen is relatively gentle and known for its graceful appearance, earning it the nickname “Hōki Fuji.” The northern side features a horseshoe-shaped large cliff, where 400-meter-high, 2-kilometer-long screen-like rocks are exposed along the ridgeline, referred to as the “North Wall.” Around an altitude of 1,400 meters, Daisen is home to a Japanese yew forest, while its mid-slopes host a natural beech forest. The mountain also boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including wild birds and insects, making it a well-known destination for hiking and tourism. At the northwestern foot of the mountain lies Daisen Temple, said to have been established in the Nara period. It once flourished as a training ground for monks and continues to attract many worshippers to this day.
