Visit Japan with Kitaro Ticket Discounts: Three Days & Nights of Unlimited Travel

Travelers planning to visit the San’in region of Japan are in luck—West Japan Railway will soon launch a new JR WEST RAIL PASS: the San’in & Okayama Area Pass. This pass allows unlimited travel within three days across Shimane, Tottori, and Okayama prefectures. The San’in region not only hosts the massive Okayama Momotaro Festival every summer but also features numerous manga character statues in Sakaiminato City, Tottori, established in honor of Shigeru Mizuki, the legendary creator of “GeGeGe no Kitaro.” The city is home to a Yōkai Shrine, shops themed around supernatural beings, and the Shigeru Mizuki Memorial Museum, dedicated to the best-selling manga “Kitaro,” which has become a popular attraction in Tottori Prefecture. Visitors can enjoy a ticket discount of over 50% at the museum by simply showing their passport and proof of short-term stay.

The San’in & Okayama Area Pass is a limited-time ticket aimed at travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. It is valid from July 1 this year until February 28, 2014 (sales end February 26, 2014). Passengers can purchase the pass at the Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket windows at Yonago, Matsue, Sakaiminato, and Okayama stations with proof of short-term stay. Alternatively, travelers can buy exchange vouchers in advance from major travel agencies in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or South Korea, then exchange them for the actual rail pass at the aforementioned stations. This pass offers unlimited rides on limited express, rapid, and local trains within Okayama, Shimane, and Tottori prefectures, as well as discounted admission to some tourist attractions.

Visitors to the Tottori area can also take advantage of the Tottori ¥1,000 Taxi Plan, a special service for foreign tourists introduced by Tottori Prefecture. Applications can be made at the Foreigner Service Center at Tottori Station, where staff can communicate in both Chinese and English. With the Tottori ¥1,000 Taxi, passengers can get on and off the same taxi as many times as they want within a three-hour period—for just ¥1,000 JPY. That’s the cost of a private car hire for three full hours. Some taxi drivers even hold Tottori Tourism Ambassador certifications and can double as local guides to help visitors explore the prefecture.

 

Additionally, the largest summer festival in Okayama—Momotaro Matsuri—will be held on August 3 and 4 along the Asahi River in Okayama. Don’t miss out on this exciting yōkai-themed festival, and make sure to use your San’in & Okayama Area Pass for great travel deals.
