To promote local specialties to Taiwan, Japan’s Tottori Prefecture renames itself “Crab Prefecture”

Japan’s San’in-San’yō region’s Tottori Prefecture has announced that it is renaming itself “Crab Prefecture”! To coincide with the recent opening of the snow crab season, which runs from early November to the end of February each year, and to leave a deeper impression on travelers and promote related gourmet tourism, the prefecture has added the alias “Crab Prefecture” to Tottori, and has also launched a campaign where groups of four travelers can receive 5,000 yen in travel vouchers.

With the Japanese yen weakening and the autumn foliage season in full swing, the number of travelers heading to Japan has surged. Tottori Governor Shinji Hirai recently announced that early November to the end of February is snow crab season, and to coincide with the opening of the snow crab fishing season, Tottori Prefecture has specially renamed itself “Crab Prefecture.” To promote the name of Crab Prefecture, Tottori’s tourism promotion staff have even dressed up as crabs while working, and have taken to the streets for publicity during weekends and holidays.

From now on, anyone traveling to Tottori Prefecture and staying at affiliated hotels within the prefecture will have the chance to receive delicious crabs—100 people per month. The campaign will run until February 28, 2015. At the same time, groups of four or more traveling to Tottori via Tokyo Haneda Airport and transferring to either Tottori Kōnan Airport or Yonago Kitaro Airport can also receive 5,000 yen in travel vouchers. The campaign will run until March 8, 2015, and is limited to 3,000 participants.
