Mizuki Shigeru Road

Mizuki Shigeru Road is located in Honcho, Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture, Chugoku region of Japan. It is a street envisioned since 1989 to integrate the yokai (monster/ghost) culture and characters from the works of Shigeru Mizuki into the urban landscape, turning the area into a tourist and cultural district. Shigeru Mizuki was a Japanese manga artist, whose real name was Shigeru Mura. He currently serves as the president of the World Yokai Association, a member of the Japanese Folklore Society, and an editorial board member of the Ethnic Art Society. Known by the nickname "Dr. Yokai," Sakaiminato City is his hometown.

Mizuki Shigeru Road was officially unveiled in 1993. Initially, 23 yokai statues were placed along the street, and the number has since grown to over 100. The trains running on the JR Sakai Line between Sakaiminato City and Yonago City are also painted with characters from the GeGeGe no Kitaro manga. The street is lined with specialty shops offering food and goods, selling a variety of yokai-themed creative products that can only be found here. There are also eyeball monster street lamps, a yokai shrine, and even a yokai mailbox—mail sent from it will be stamped with a yokai postmark.

At the end of the road is the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum, which displays realistic yokai paintings and a collection of yokai artifacts that Shigeru Mizuki gathered from around the world, sure to be an eye-opening experience.
