Tottori Castle

Tottori Castle is a renkaku-style castle situated at the summit of Mount Kijou in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Constructed approximately during the Tenbun era (1532–1555), it functioned as the domain government seat of the Tottori Domain in the Edo period. Skillfully making use of the natural landscape of Mount Kijou, it ranks among Japan’s hundred most famous castles. Having endured the passage of time, only ruins such as the tenshu foundation and the ni-no-maru renkaku-style fortifications remain. It has been designated as a national historic site in Japan and stands as one of Tottori City’s most iconic tourist attractions.

Historically, Tottori Castle witnessed numerous battles and changes in ownership, gaining fame particularly for Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s food supply siege strategy. In 1873, when Japan implemented the castle abolition order, Tottori Castle was spared from demolition, but in 1877, most unnecessary structures were torn down, leaving only the tenshu platform and stone walls. Today, the area around Tottori Castle has been developed into Kijou Park, a beloved leisure spot for local residents, especially popular during the cherry blossom season in spring when it attracts many visitors. Additionally, the square at the foot of Mount Kijou is planted with numerous azaleas, which bloom after the cherry blossoms fade, also drawing considerable tourist attention.
