Wakasa-Misaki Shrine

Wakasa-Misaki Shrine is located in Ohuchiyazume, Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, in the Chugoku region of Japan. It was established by Yasuda Kazue, a retainer of the Amako clan during the Sengoku period, who enshrined a divided spirit of the Hinomisaki Shrine from Izumo here. It consists of both a main hall and a Inari hall, thus having two separate approaches for worship, making it one of the most unique shrines in Japan.

The interior of Wakasa-Misaki Shrine is serene and refined, complemented by towering ancient trees and various historic structures. There is also an old pond that gushes forth crystal-clear spring water, which flows into the sea as a small stream. It is said that the water from this ancient pond is holy, and those who have done wrong will instantly become virtuous upon drinking it. Surrounding the shrine are dozens of carved stone Koryo foxes of varying sizes, all wearing red caps to welcome worshippers. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that not only do they differ in size, but each one has its own unique expression.

Legend has it that Wakasa-Misaki Shrine is especially effective for those seeking “lost items,” drawing many people who have lost belongings to come and pray. The Koryo foxes welcoming visitors seem to ask, “What are you looking for?”
