Kibi Shrine

Kibi Island is a small hill with an elevation of 38 meters located near Mizutori Park in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, in the Chugoku region of Japan. At the top of the hill stands an ancient shrine called Kibi Shrine, which enshrines the deity Sukunabikona. Sukunabikona is also known as Sukunahikona-no-Kami, Sukunaikona, or Sukuhaikona, and is a deity in Japanese mythology who was later worshipped as the god of wisdom and medicine. According to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), he is the son of Kamimusubi-no-Kami; according to the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), he is the son of Takamimusubi-no-Kami.

The area around Kibi Shrine is covered with lush primeval forest, which has been protected for centuries as a sacred grove and is home to many rare species. As a result, it has been designated as a Natural Monument of Tottori Prefecture and a scenic spot of Yonago City. Additionally, the shrine’s surroundings are part of the “Eight Scenic Views of Kinhai,” particularly famous for the view known as “Autumn Moon over Kibi Island.” Climbing the 187 stone steps to the top of Kibi Island offers visitors a unique experience as they enjoy the view of Kinhai (Nakaumi) Lake under the setting sun.
