Yonago Waterbird Park

Yonago Waterbird Park is located in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, in the Chugoku region of Japan. It is Japan’s largest waterbird sanctuary and also garners international attention. This is the home of many waterbirds, especially geese and ducks. On average, 75,000 birds visit each year, and in winter, around 1,000 tundra swans spend the season here, earning it the nickname “Japan’s Swan Lake.”

Yonago Waterbird Park is a prime destination for birdwatching. The park features specially designed outdoor viewing trails where visitors can set up telescopes and cameras to observe the birds’ every move. Every November, large flocks of swans fly from afar to spend the winter here, bringing lively splashes of color to the cold season and creating a stunning contrast against the snow — one of Yonago’s signature winter tourist attractions. In March, when the swans prepare to return home, visitors have the chance to admire their majestic circling flights as they spread their wings in the sky.

Aside from waterbirds, Yonago Waterbird Park is also home to rare flora and fauna, including deep-water plants like mare’s tail and aquatic insects such as dragonfly larvae. Mare’s tail, in particular, is said to be on the verge of extinction, drawing significant interest from experts.
