Tottori City

Tottori City is a city in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, serving as the prefectural capital and the largest city in the San'in region. As early as the Edo period, it was a well-known "jokamachi" (castle town) in Japan, and was elevated to special city status in October 2005, making it one of the most renowned cities in Tottori Prefecture.

Tottori City is a place where long-standing culture and majestic nature coexist. Its most famous tourist destination is the ruins of Tottori Castle, now known as Kusakabe Park, which was once a battlefield during the Warring States period. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom vibrantly across the park. The samurai residences scattered throughout the former castle grounds evoke vivid imagery of the past. As a key attraction in Tottori City, "Tottori Sand Dunes" is extremely well-known. Stretching 16 kilometers from east to west and 2.4 kilometers from north to south, the dunes feature a maximum sandhill drop of about 90 meters. In winter, the "Tottori Sand Dunes Fantasy" event is held, during which 200,000 colorful lights decorate the area around the dunes, creating a spectacularly romantic atmosphere. Walking through the streets, visitors can see many historic sites and charming townscapes, such as the only remaining "buke-mon" (samurai gate) in the city, featuring a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof covered with gray tiles that looks imposing; and the French Renaissance-style Kenkaku Pavilion, hailed as a masterpiece of Western-style architecture from the Meiji era.

Tottori City has a rich cultural atmosphere. The Tottori Folk Craft Museum displays folk art pieces collected not only from Tottori but also from various parts of Japan and many countries around the world. The Watanabe Art Museum showcases 15,000 ancient artworks from around the globe along with tools used by everyday people.
