Mount Nantai

Also known as Mount Futara, Mount Nikko, or Shimotsuke Fuji, Mount Nantai is a conical stratovolcano located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, with an elevation of 2,486 meters. The mountain gets its name from Mount Nyohō (2,483 meters), located to its northeast. There are also two slightly lower peaks between them—Mount Ōmanamuki (2,375.4 meters) and Mount Kommanamuki (2,322.9 meters)—together with Mount Tarō (2,367.5 meters) to the northwest, forming a volcanic family.

Situated within Nikko National Park and adjacent to the tranquil Lake Chūzenji, Mount Nantai boasts beautiful scenery and majestic form. It is one of Japan’s Hundred Famous Mountains and one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Nikko City. A favorite spot for hiking enthusiasts, the mountain attracts large numbers of domestic and international visitors every year. There are two main climbing routes: the Chūgūshi-guchi Trailhead (at 1,280 meters) and the Shizu-guchi Trailhead (at 1,785 meters). The Shizu-guchi Trail is mostly dirt and can be challenging to climb on rainy days, though easier to descend. It is the more popular choice among tourists, especially in autumn when the path from Shizu-guchi to Mihonmatsu is lined with vibrant red leaves—an ideal place for leaf-peeping.
