Every year between April and May, one of Japan’s must-see floral events is the wisteria blossoms. Located in Tochigi Prefecture, the Ashikaga Flower Park is famed for its over 1,000 square meter expanse of 350 wisteria trees, and recently, the park’s wisteria sea has entered its most stunning period. Now is the time to admire the purple waterfalls cascading from the sky.

Ashikaga Flower Park boasts 350 wisteria trees in various colors, among which the 150-year-old great purple wisteria, every year around this time, blooms into a breathtaking sea of wisteria on its 1,000-square-meter trellis. This magnificent purple waterfall could easily be called the Niagara Falls of flower seas, so much so that American media outlet CNN listed Ashikaga Flower Park as one of the world’s 10 most dreamy travel destinations because of this floral display.

In addition to this spectacular purple waterfall, the park also features various colorful wisteria tunnels worth seeing, such as an 80-meter-long white wisteria tunnel, Japan’s only 80-meter-long yellow wisteria tunnel, and pale pink wisteria blooms, all interwoven into a breathtaking scene in early summer.

Finding out the current condition of the wisteria sea is simple — Ashikaga Flower Park adjusts its daily admission prices based on the bloom status. The most beautiful period also means the highest ticket price, at 1,700 yen per person, while nighttime entry is more affordable at 1,400 yen per person.

Visitors can enjoy the daytime beauty of the wisteria and then stay in the park. From now until the 14th, Ashikaga Flower Park is holding a nighttime opening event with illuminated wisteria displays. The wisteria season at Ashikaga Flower Park continues until the 21st.
