The Japanese tavern “Kayabukiya” in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, employs macaques as waiters, paying them with delicious bananas. The monkeys have been working at the tavern for 29 years, dressed in checkered uniforms, not only helping customers with beer and napkins but also taking soybeans as tips. Actually, the little monkey was originally a pet raised by the tavern owner and shares a very close bond with the family, even sleeping together at night.

Many people visit this izakaya because of the little monkey waiters. Not only tourists come to pay homage, but locals are also regulars. Even Japan’s Minister of Defense visited last year, adding to its popularity. The monkey waiters’ job in the shop includes handing out hand towels, cups, and drinks. When they’re in a good mood, they even perform monkey tricks. Their daily work time is about two hours. The shop owner says these monkeys are like their children—smart and obedient—and now they’ve become beloved alternative stars.
