Maruyama Zoo

Located at the foot of the Maruyama Primeval Forest near downtown Sapporo in Hokkaido, Japan, Maruyama Zoo officially opened on May 5, 1951. It is the tenth zoo in Japan and the oldest zoo established in Hokkaido.

The zoo features over 200 exhibits, housing more than 1,000 species of animals, greatly satisfying visitors' curiosity about wildlife. At Maruyama Zoo, visitors can observe powerful creatures such as lions, tigers, polar bears, elephants, giraffes, and hippos up close, touch small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs, feed squirrels through their feeding baskets, and watch birds of prey like kites soaring in the open-air enclosures. In April 2006, a new two-story observation deck connected to the monkey hill was completed. The first floor includes facilities such as hammocks and climbing walls, allowing visitors to play while experiencing the life of monkeys. The second floor offers tables and chairs for resting or freely watching Japanese macaques scramble for food and play, making for a very relaxing experience.
