The Sapporo White Illuminations event first began in 1981, making it Japan’s earliest light festival. Now approaching its 34th year, it has grown from an initial 1,000 bulbs to a dazzling display of 400,000 light balls that make winter in Sapporo vibrant and colorful.

The 34th Sapporo White Illuminations kicked off on November 21, with the Odori Park venue featuring light art inspired by the cosmos and Christmas, shining brilliantly. The area in front of Sapporo Station becomes quite dreamlike. In addition, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Sapporo and Munich, Germany, since 2002, various stalls offering Christmas goods, mulled wine, and German cuisine have appeared near the main stage in Odori Park just before Christmas. Original mugs with unique designs each year are also sold. Live concerts are held on the open-air stage, and lucky visitors might even receive gifts from Santa Claus.
