The Sapporo White Illuminations originally began in 1981, making it Japan’s first light tree festival. Approaching its 34th year, it started with just 1,000 bulbs and has now expanded to a magnificent scale of 400,000 light balls, making winter in Sapporo dazzling and colorful.

The 34th Sapporo White Illuminations kicked off on November 21.At the Odori Park venue, light art featuring symbols of the universe and Christmas shines brilliantly. The area around Sapporo Station Street takes on a dreamy ambiance. Additionally, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Sapporo and Munich, Germany, since 2002, various stalls offering Christmas goods, mulled wine, and German cuisine have appeared near the main stage at Odori Park just before Christmas. Original mugs with unique designs each year are also on sale. A live music stage will feature concerts, and lucky visitors might even receive gifts from Santa Claus.
