Yagi Observation Hill is located in the southwestern part of Ishikari Plain in Hokkaido, Japan, southeast of Sapporo City, and is a well-known scenic spot in the city. From the observation hill, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Sapporo’s urban landscape and the beautiful scenery of Ishikari Plain, making it a popular destination that attracts many tourists.

Yagi is a gently rolling, open hillside area with fertile soil and lush grass. Since 1906, it has been an important cattle grazing site in Japan, and sheep herding began here in 1919—hence the name “Yagi” (meaning “goat” or “sheep” hill). Standing at Yagi Observation Hill, with the cool breeze blowing and sheep grazing on the green grass nearby, a peaceful pastoral atmosphere naturally emerges. At dusk, the entire field is bathed in golden twilight, presenting a beauty that is different from the daytime.

In one corner of the observation hill stands a bronze statue of American educator Dr. William S. Clark, and his famous quote “Boys be ambitious” is engraved on the base of the statue. To this day, people affectionately refer to the doctor as the “Father of Hokkaido Development,” and his words continue to inspire many as a motivational motto frequently quoted.
