Hokkaido Pioneer Village

Hokkaido Pioneer Village is an open-air museum established in 1983, located in Atsubetsu-cho, Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo City, Hokkaido. It was primarily created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido's establishment. The village bears witness to the development history of Hokkaido and offers visitors an up-close look at its pioneering past.

Visiting Hokkaido Pioneer Village allows you to learn a great deal about the historical development of life, culture, industry, and economy during Hokkaido’s pioneering era. Many of the “artifacts” on display in this unique museum are historical buildings that have been relocated, restored, and preserved here. These structures are typical representatives reflecting the economic, cultural, and industrial progress as well as everyday life scenes of the pioneer period—such as residences, schools, factories, and shops. Additionally, the village features expansive areas representing urban districts, fishing villages, farming communities, and mountain villages, showcasing period transportation such as horse-drawn railways and horse-pulled sleighs. Some of these can even operate on-site, allowing visitors to ride and personally experience life in those times.
