Mituo Mountain is located in the northern part of Xinrong District, backed by the ancient Great Wall and commanding the area between the two fortresses of Juqiang and Jumen. The mountain rises abruptly from the flat ground, offering a broad view from its summit. It guards a key transportation hub between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, and has long been a fiercely contested strategic site along the frontier Great Wall. Throughout historical wars, as well as the War of Resistance against Japan and the Liberation War, it played an immortal role, winning deep affection from the local people and giving rise to many wonderful and magical legends. It is said that a local man, caught in continuous rainy weather, spent forty-nine days telling the story of Mituo Mountain to a “southerner” while staying at an inn—the rain lasted forty-nine days, and he talked for forty-nine days, only managing to reach the Water Pavilion at the mountain’s halfway point. This shows just how many legends the mountain holds. Among the many tales, the most famous is the one about the formation of Mituo Mountain.

In the early 1980s, the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China brought a “treasure basin” to Mituo Mountain. The people of Guojiaoyao and Puziwan townships planted trees and grass on the mountain to transform nature. The 10,000-mu plantation of Mongolian pine became a model project of the province’s “Three-North” Shelterbelt Program. Gradually, Mituo Mountain began to restore its original appearance, and with a brand-new look, it continues to make new contributions to the people of the entire district.
