Jinhua Palace National Mine Park

Jinhua Palace Mine Park, located about 13 kilometers west of Datong City and separated by a river from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Yungang Grottoes, developed China’s first and Asia’s only “Underground Exploration Tour” project in 2000, becoming one of the first national industrial tourism demonstration sites. The park combines the protection of industrial heritage, environmental renewal, ecological restoration, and green mine construction. It is a new type of leisure and sightseeing destination as well as a mining culture and creative park that preserves a complete modern industrial memory. Key attractions in the park include the Coal Museum and the Underground Adventure Tour. The Coal Museum in the park is a large geological and mining museum that combines science, knowledge, aesthetics, and entertainment. Its prized exhibit is a silicified wood that has turned into coal—jet black in color with clear textures, where visitors can still distinctly see the original plant’s scales and veins. Visitors can also join the Underground Adventure Tour to genuinely learn about the history of coal formation during the Jurassic period 140 million years ago, experience the historical evolution from primitive to modern coal mining, and immerse themselves in the underground life of coal miners. Before going underground, visitors need to change into work clothes and wear safety helmets. Once around five people gather, a designated staff member will lead the group underground.

Special Notices

1. Seniors over 60, children under 12, people with disabilities, heart disease patients, and other special groups are not allowed to join the Underground Adventure Tour.

2. Due to the special nature of the underground area, a minimum of five people is required for the tour. If fewer than five people are present, please follow the arrangement of park staff.

3. The Underground Adventure is a restricted area. For visitor safety, the site will be closed to the public if gas levels exceed safe limits.

Take bus No. 10 to Yungang Station or No. 3 to Yungang Grottoes Station in the city, then take a motorcycle taxi to the park

Children under 1.2 meters tall are exempt from the 32 RMB Coal Museum ticket

Seniors over 60 years old with a senior ID card are exempt from the 32 RMB Coal Museum ticket

Children between 1.2–1.4 meters tall and full-time students with a student ID can purchase discounted park tickets

Underground Adventure insurance, disposable items (towels, gloves, socks, head covers, masks, etc.), and guide fees are charged separately
