Longtan Holy Scripture Pavilion

The Holy Scripture Pavilion, also known as the Character-Respecting Pavilion or Character-Revering Pavilion, is a traditional Taiwanese facility used for burning written paper as an act of reverence for Cangjie, the mythical creator of Chinese characters. These pavilions are mostly found in Hakka communities. The Longtan Holy Scripture Pavilion was originally built in the first year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1875), and underwent renovations in the 18th year of Guangxu, the 14th year of the Republic of China, and 1979 (the 68th year of the ROC). It has a history of over 120 years. Covering an area of 950 square meters, it is the largest and most comprehensively designed Holy Scripture Pavilion in Taiwan, and has been designated as a county-level historical monument.

The Longtan Holy Scripture Pavilion is located on the western side of Longtan Slope, surrounded by lush greenery and set in a beautiful natural environment, making it the most magnificent and picturesque among the many such pavilions in Taoyuan County. It features an overall symmetrical layout along a central axis, with structures including the pavilion body, central gate, and front gate, all arranged in an orderly fashion. The central gate, formed by a cloud-patterned wall with a wide, eight-character entrance, boasts gracefully curved lines. The tall stone writing brushes flanking either side enhance the sense of stability and grandeur in the space, reflecting the devotion and craftsmanship of its designers and builders. It is the only surviving Holy Scripture Pavilion in Taiwan that incorporates a garden-style layout, making it exceptionally precious.
