Daguanshan Nature Reserve
Lala Mountain is situated at the junction of the eastern part of Fuxing Township in Taoyuan County and Wulai District in New Taipei City. The area is densely forested with tall trees, and being there gives visitors a feeling of openness and optimism, which led to its renaming as Daguanshan (Mountain of Broad Vision) by the Taiwan Provincial Government in August 1975. In August 1986, the Forestry Bureau established the Daguanshan Nature Reserve, spanning an altitude of 1,400 to 1,900 meters and covering an area of 6,390 hectares. It was created to protect the reserve's precious trees, including massive red cypresses, pure beech forests, and green maples. Today, this nature reserve has become one of the most famous state-owned ecotourism destinations in northern Taiwan.
The Daguanshan Forest Reserve boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It is home to tree species such as red cypress clusters, Hinoki cypress, green maple, beech, mixed broadleaf forests, and natural forests. Among these, 22 ancient trees known as "divine trees" are of particular interest, with ages ranging from 500 to 3,000 years. These are scattered along a 3.7-kilometer scenic walking trail. In terms of wildlife, species such as red cypress, beech, Hinoki cypress, Formosan black bears, macaques, Mikado pheasants, and Formosan sika deer have been listed as nationally protected species.
Not only is the area rich in biodiversity, but the facilities within the Daguanshan Forest Reserve are also well-developed. The park features a Natural Ecology Interpretation Hall that displays images and specimens of various animals and plants, along with guided interpretation services. Other amenities include hiking trails, a cypress-scented path, and Daguanshan Pavilion, all of which provide great convenience for visitors to rest and relax.
