Guanyin Scenic Area

Guanyin Village in Guanyin Township is located at the midpoint of Taoyuan’s coastline. Along with the neighboring Xinwu Township, it is a long-established settlement, home to scenic spots such as the Stone Guanyin at Ganquan Temple and the Baishajiao Lighthouse. Though situated in a remote coastal corner, it enjoys considerable fame.

Ganquan Temple was originally named Guanyin Temple. During the Guangxu era, a spring suddenly emerged beside the temple. The water was sweet and refreshing, and it was said to have healing properties for various diseases. Locals flocked here to fetch drinking water, and the Guanyin Temple was subsequently renamed Ganquan Temple. The villagers also set up a Ganquan Well at the spring’s source and built a small pavilion, enshrining a statue of the Goddess of Mercy. Later, as more miraculous tales spread, the temple underwent continuous renovations, eventually becoming the grand structure seen today. It has long served as a spiritual center for local residents.

Looking out from Ganquan Temple toward the sea, you can see the white, circular Baishajiao Lighthouse rising from the ground. Completed in 1901, the lighthouse is built of brick and stands 36.6 meters tall, making it the second tallest lighthouse in Taiwan. Its base proudly rises from a stretch of green fields, and those who climb the stairs to the top are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

Walking from Ganquan Temple toward the beach, you will see a towering Guanyin statue over 20 meters high standing at the end of Zhongxing Road. Modeled after the Guanyin statue in Zhongzheng Park, Keelung, this benevolent figure watches over the land beneath her.

Transportation Tips: Take a Taoyuan Bus bound for Guanyin from in front of Taoyuan Railway Station or Zhongli City, and get off at Ganquan Temple. From there, follow Xinyi Road and Guangming Road for about 850 meters to reach the Baishajiao Lighthouse. Follow Zhongxing Road for about 1.2 kilometers to get to the beach.
