Daxi Zhaiming Temple

Zhaiming Temple is situated beside Provincial Highway 3 between Daxi and Longtan. Established during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, it is the oldest Zen temple in Daxi Town and has been designated as a third-grade historical site. The temple complex spans approximately 2–3 hectares, facing the streets of Daxi across the Dahan River. Nestled in an elegant environment surrounded by bamboo groves and lush woods, it offers scenic views from both near and far.

The temple houses a replica of the only Song Dynasty edition of the Qisha Canon in Taiwan. This woodblock-printed version was painstakingly funded over 91 years by three generations of devout nuns who each amputated their own arms to plead for donations. It was finally completed during the Song and Yuan periods and is considered extremely precious.

Zhaiming Temple showcases the simple style of a traditional Zen monastery through its classic rural three-section courtyard layout. The temple grounds are covered with lush green grass and blooming flowers, creating a serene and refined atmosphere. In 1929, the “Cui Ling Pagoda” was added behind the temple. As the temple and pagoda were constructed in different eras, the former retains traditional Chinese architectural elements, while the latter reflects modern concrete construction—offering a glimpse into the architectural styles of different periods.

Transportation guide: Take the Taoyuan Bus bound for Longtan from Zhonghua Road in Taoyuan City and get off at the Zhaiming Temple stop. The temple’s entrance arch will be right there. Walk along Zhaiming Street for about 800 meters to reach the temple.
