Introduction

The Macao Museum of Art, under the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, is located on Avenida Xian Xing Hai in the Macao Cultural Centre in the new reclamation area, and is part of the Macao Cultural Centre. It is the only museum in Macao dedicated to art and cultural relics, as well as the largest venue for visual art exhibitions in the city. The Macao Museum of Art opened on March 19, 1999, with a total area of over 10,000 square meters and an exhibition space of nearly 4,000 square meters. The museum houses a rich collection of precious artworks and cultural relics, including Chinese calligraphy and paintings, seals, ceramics, bronzeware, Western paintings, modern art, and photography.

The museum has five floors and a total of seven exhibition halls. The fourth floor hosts the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Gallery and the Chinese Ceramics Gallery, primarily displaying the museum’s collection of ancient Chinese calligraphy and paintings, as well as Shiwan ceramics from Guangdong. The third and second floors each feature a thematic exhibition gallery that hosts various special exhibitions showcasing artworks loaned from other regions or artists. The Historical Painting Gallery is located on the third floor and displays Western paintings, mainly export paintings, as well as European prints depicting Macao, including works by the British artist George Chinnery and his Chinese student Lam Qua.

The first floor and the ground floor respectively house the Lobby Exhibition Area and Ground Floor Exhibition Area, mainly showcasing the museum’s art collections as well as works by artists from outside Macao and emerging local talent. The Lecture Hall, located on the first floor, can accommodate over 100 people and is equipped with slide and video projection facilities. It regularly hosts various thematic seminars and lectures. There is also an attached multimedia library with books, audiobooks, and internet access related to art, available for free use by readers. Additionally, there is an audiovisual room where the public can enjoy over 400 classic Chinese and foreign films for free.
