When traveling, everyone wants to make the most of their time—drop off luggage ASAP and head out to eat, shop, and explore. But have you ever had the frustrating experience of waiting half an hour just to check in? You can avoid that hassle at CHASE Walker Hotel in Taichung, as the hotel offers a fully self-service, computerized check-in process.
Walking into the lobby, you might think it’s deserted due to poor service—but in fact, there’s no staff at all. As soon as you push the door open, sensors trigger automated voice prompts. Guests simply input whether they have a reservation, confirm the number of nights and people staying, and place their ID on the scanning area for record-keeping. Then you can choose one or two key cards. The whole process takes just three minutes.

Next to the lobby is an automated robotic arm that catches the eye of many guests. This “robotic arm,” designed at a cost of NT$4 million, is dedicated to storing luggage. During check-in, guests can select their luggage size via the computer system, which then opens a corresponding gray drawer. Simply place your luggage inside, and it will be automatically stored—no human staff involved at all.

This fully self-service hotel not only saves on labor costs but also helps guests cut down on check-in expenses. The hotel has 63 rooms, and from the entrance to the lobby and rooms, the industrial-style design is consistent—wooden floors paired with partially rusted metal accents. Most rooms are doubles with private bathrooms, averaging about NT$213 per night.

You’re probably wondering: what if you need help? Actually, phones are available in rooms, at the check-in area, and elsewhere. Just pick up the phone, dial a designated number, and you’ll get 24/7 assistance from staff. So for those who hate hassle, it might be worth a try.
That said, hospitality is ultimately a people-oriented industry, and a fully computerized check-in process can feel a bit cold. It’s fun to try once, but maybe not twice—ha ha.
