Holy House of Mercy Building

Introduction

The Holy House of Mercy is located in Senado Square. Established in 1569 by the first Bishop of Macau, Melchior Carneiro, it was dedicated to charitable and relief work, hence the name “Holy House of Mercy.” After its founding, the institution opened China’s first Western-style hospital, the Hospital da Misericórdia (also known as the Hospital of White Horse Street), and established facilities such as a foundling home, leprosarium, elderly home, and orphanage.

The Holy House of Mercy Building was constructed in the mid-18th century and took its present form by 1905, featuring Neoclassical architectural style. Except for the granite column bases, the entire building is painted white, which gives it a quiet and elegant appearance despite the rich decorative lines on the façade. Transportation
