Nam Van Garden is located in front of the Fortaleza do Monte near the Hotel Lisboa, also known as the Fortaleza Garden. The garden is divided into upper and lower sections. The lower section lies between Avenida da Praia Grande and Rua Central. The upper section is split into two tiers, connected by stone steps, and situated between Rua Central, Calçada do Bombardamento, Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, and Rua da Guia Nova.

The garden is planted with green trees and flowers, and furnished with numerous stone benches for visitors to rest and enjoy the scenery.

In the upper part of the garden, at the foot of Guia Hill, stands a rather unique cylindrical building, two stories high, which is the Monument to the Fallen of World War I, commemorating Portuguese soldiers who died in the war. The monument features round arch windows and doors, walls adorned with decorative patterns, and a crown-shaped ornament at the top, making it highly eye-catching.

Next to the garden is the Octagonal Pavilion Library, originally the garden’s refreshment area. It now serves as a reading room for newspapers and magazines operated by the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, and is one of Macau’s more sizable public reading spaces.

This garden has a long history and can be considered Macau’s first garden, currently covering an area of 6,000 square meters. Its origins are linked to the Convento de São Francisco established by Franciscan friars from Castile (Spain) on February 2, 1580. The Chinese name of this garden, “加思栏花园” (Jiāsīlán Huāyuán), means “the Garden of the Castilians.”
