Macao Cultural Centre Square

Macao Cultural Centre Square is one of the four major squares in Macao, located adjacent to the Macao Cultural Centre, and is the original site of the venue where the 1999 Macao handover ceremony between China and Portugal took place.

To hold the Macao sovereignty handover ceremony in 1999, the governments of China and Portugal constructed a temporary venue on the open space beside the Macao Cultural Centre. In June 2000, the handover ceremony venue was demolished by the Macao SAR Government, which explained that the area would be turned into a square to commemorate the event. Macao Cultural Centre Square was completed in 2002, but to date, no events or inauguration ceremonies have been held there.

At the center of Macao Cultural Centre Square lies the Macao Handover Time Capsule, originally installed by the Portuguese government at the handover ceremony venue. The time capsule is intended to be opened in 2049 (the 50th anniversary of Macao’s handover), and contains documents related to the handover, including the Basic Law of Macao.
