Macao Science Center

The Macao Science Center serves as a base for science education and outreach.

The Macao Science Center is the only science-themed museum in Macao, designed by the renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei and invested in and built by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government. The center is situated on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen in the new reclamation area of Macao’s new port area, adjacent to the Macao Cultural Centre and Macao Fisherman’s Wharf. On December 19, 2009, the President of China and the then Chief Executive of Macao, Edmund Ho Hau Wah, presided over the opening ceremony of the new center. The Science Center officially opened to the public on January 25, 2010.

Covering an area of approximately 22,850 square meters with a total floor space of about 32,245 square meters, the main building of the Macao Science Center consists of a combination of an inclined cone, a hemispherical dome, and a diamond-shaped base. The exterior is adorned with silver aluminum panels and glass curtain walls. The glass curtain walls allow natural light into the interior, reflecting the scientific and environmentally friendly design philosophy. The entire complex includes the Exhibition Center (the main building), an planetarium, a conference center, and podium buildings, with outdoor escalators installed. The center is equipped with advanced hardware facilities. Its planetarium features an 8000×8000 pixel spherical screen that projects three-dimensional visuals, making it one of the world’s top indoor projection systems—more advanced than similar equipment in Beijing and Hong Kong.
