Ng Tung Chai Waterfall

Also known as Lam Tsuen Waterfall or the Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls, Ng Tung Chai Waterfall is the largest existing waterfall in Hong Kong. It is located in Ng Tung Chai, in the southwestern part of Tai Po District in the New Territories. With a drop of over 30 metres, the waterfall is fed by water from the Lam Tsuen Valley in Tai Mo Shan, flowing down Ng Tung Chai Waterfall before continuing along the Lam Tsuen River into Tolo Harbour. The scenic beauty of the cascading waterfall and secluded valley has made it a popular destination among hikers and photography enthusiasts.

Ng Tung Chai Waterfall can be divided into four parts: the Scattering Waterfall, the Main Waterfall (also called the Long Waterfall), the Middle Waterfall (also known as the Horse-tail Waterfall), and the Lower Waterfall (also called the Bottom-of-the-Well Waterfall). Among them, the Main Waterfall stands 30 metres high, is narrow and long in shape, and the water flows gently from a height due to its relatively mild current. Though it lacks the force of the Middle Waterfall, it still possesses a delicate beauty. As the name suggests, the Scattering Waterfall features water that fans out like a maiden’s loose hair, spreading like strands across the rocks. The Middle Waterfall has a very rapid flow, with water plummeting down forcefully and impressively. A cool and refreshing sensation is created by the occasional breeze and splashes of water droplets. The Bottom-of-the-Well Waterfall is the smallest of the four, but its pool is extremely clear. Coupled with the shaded surroundings, it offers a feeling of being deep in the mountains. Due to its more spacious area, many visitors enjoy spending time here.

The four waterfalls of Ng Tung Chai are all connected by the same hiking trail, making them convenient to visit. Here, you can admire a variety of unique natural waterfall wonders — some rushing, some flowing steadily, and others fanning out — offering a truly wild and pristine mountain experience. Although some sections of the path are steep and rugged, especially those leading to the Main Waterfall and the Scattering Waterfall, the effort is well worth it in the end.
