Museum of Ethnology

The Museum of Ethnology (Museum of Ethnology) is located at No. 2 Hung Lam Road, Tai Po Kau, New Territories, Hong Kong, within the Kerry Plover Cove Interactive Centre. Opened in 2000, it is the first museum in Hong Kong themed around global ethnic groups, exhibiting over a thousand cultural treasures from different parts of the world. These artifacts demonstrate how humans in diverse geographical environments have utilized and combined elements of nature—plants, wood, stones—along with creativity and invention to improve their quality of life. The astonishing wisdom and vitality contained within these items, as well as the spirit of “adaptation” and “improvement,” are qualities increasingly forgotten by modern urban dwellers.

In the mid-1990s, Kerry Properties planned to develop a large residential project called “Ditaland” in Tai Po Kau, which included 12 nine-story apartment blocks, 50 detached villas, and 28 duplex townhouses. As the site is adjacent to a lagoon and mangrove wetland that serves as a habitat for egrets, the government stipulated in the land lease that the developer must construct and operate the Tai Po Kau Interactive Nature Centre (now known as the Kerry Plover Cove Interactive Centre) to promote environmental awareness and knowledge. In addition to the Museum of Ethnology, the Kerry Plover Cove Interactive Centre also features the “Little Egret Restaurant” and the “Nature Activity Centre.”
