Baiyanggou Mud Volcano Cluster

The Baiyanggou Mud Volcano Cluster is located about 40 kilometers south of Usu City and approximately 2.5 kilometers from Baiyanggou Town, at an altitude of 1,281 meters. It spans an area roughly 200 meters long and 100 meters wide, and contains around 40 mud eruption vents. Mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes; their eruptions are caused by underground natural gas (methane) being ejected to the surface, which forces the earth’s soil upward, creating the spectacular sight of natural gas and mud erupting together in a swirling motion. The erupted mud gradually accumulates to form small, cone-shaped mud volcano mounds.
