Despite the intense summer heat, the passion of hikers remained undimmed. From July 21 to 23, the 2017 China Hiking Tour · National Hiking Conference Heixiazi Island Station was held on Heixiazi Island in Fuyuan City, Heilongjiang Province. Hiking lovers from all over China explored the cool summer of Heixiazi Island to witness China’s first sunrise and experienced the distinct vibes of two nations along the border.

The event was jointly organized by the Chinese Mountaineering Association, the Heilongjiang Provincial Sports Bureau, the Heilongjiang Provincial Government Construction and Management Committee of Heixiazi Island, and the People’s Government of Fuyuan City. It was hosted by the Heilongjiang Provincial Social Sports Guidance Center, the Tourism, Culture and Sports Bureau of the Heilongjiang Provincial Government Construction and Management Committee of Heixiazi Island, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Mountaineering Association. A total of 503 participants from 13 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions—including Gansu, Chongqing, Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Henan, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Beijing, Zhejiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, and Liaoning—joined the activity.
On the first day, the hiking route spanned 28 kilometers, covering various surfaces including asphalt roads, dirt paths, cement roads, and tree-lined avenues. The first day’s course passed by People’s Square, the West Gate Archway, and the Dafengchang Windmill Hill, allowing hikers to take in the frontier town scenery of Fuyuan. The city of Fuyuan was neat and tidy, with many buildings featuring Russian architectural styles, giving off a uniquely foreign atmosphere. At the first supply point in Hexi Village, hospitable villagers offered watermelons and tomatoes grown in their own fields, earning high praise from the hikers. “We were already extremely tired, but after tasting such delicious, pollution-free, organic fruits, we instantly felt reinvigorated,” said a hiker from Beijing.

The second day’s route started from the Hezhe ethnic minority new village in Zhaji Town, covering a total of 20 kilometers. The Hezhe ethnic minority new village in Zhaji Town preserves the most authentic Hezhe cultural elements, showcasing the traditional way of life of the Hezhe people. In front of the “Hometown of Fish” gate, Hezhe girls performed traditional ethnic dances to welcome the visiting guests. The Wusuli Bridge, known as China’s “First Bridge in the East,” is the easternmost bridge in China and was the highlight of the second day’s route. This grand bridge not only boasts an impressive structure...
...but also features blooming flowers on both sides, leaving everyone enchanted.

The National Hiking Conference is a major outdoor fitness event series developed in recent years by the Chinese Mountaineering Association. To date, more than 30 events have been held, aiming to promote outdoor activities and advance the national fitness program. The China Hiking Tour is based on the National Hiking Conference, with the goal of covering all 34 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, and special administrative regions in China. It seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of China through the healthiest form of outdoor activity—hiking—and ultimately achieve the objective of nationwide fitness. This year, the National Hiking Conference has already been held in three locations: Wansheng in Chongqing, Baoquan in Henan, and Baise in Guangxi. Upcoming events will take place in Qinghai Lake, Zhangye, Gongga Mountain, and other destinations.
