As the section of the provincial highway from Jingyuan to Longde that traverses the Liupan Mountains, the Zhonggu Ancient Road is a pre-Qin pathway within the territory of Jingyuan. During the Spring and Autumn, Warring States, Qin, and Han periods, rulers—motivated by military, political, and economic needs—developed this ancient footpath into a major transportation route connecting Guyuan and Xi’an. After Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified the six states and constructed the imperial highways, the Zhonggu Road was initially developed. The Han Dynasty established Anding Commandery in what is now Guyuan, further accelerating the road’s expansion. By the time of Emperor Wu of Han, the Zhonggu Road had become an essential corridor of the Silk Road, linking Guyuan to the Central Shaanxi Plain and extending northward to the Hexi Corridor and the Western Regions.
