Shanan Gorge

Shanan Gorge Shanan Gorge is located about 5 kilometers east of the county seat and on the eastern side of Shanan Village in Yuanzi Township, also known as "Golden Buddha Gorge." It is where the Xiangshui River, Shengyi River, and Jing River converge. Due to the intense erosion by the Jing River, a 4.5-kilometer-long river valley landscape has formed, featuring steep cliffs and swiftly flowing water. The area includes mid-scale landform features such as the Giant Lizard Peak, Nine Extremes Summit, and Three Raised Peaks, as well as small-scale landform features like the Buddha Belly Cliff, Elephant Trunk Rock, Hippo Playing in Water, and South Gorge Elephant Island. Historically, it was one of the eight major scenic spots in the county. The landscape is characterized mainly by its steep canyons, peculiar peaks and rocks, rapid Jing River waters, a series of midstream islands, and large areas of secondary forests. Visitors can take in the dramatic peaks along the gorge and look down into the deep valleys and rushing currents. The scenery changes at every step, offering a constantly shifting and diverse panorama, which has also earned it the nickname “Little Three Gorges of the Jing River.”
