Qinghai Potash Fertilizer Plant

Introduction: One of the more interesting salt lake attractions near Golmud is the Qinghai Potash Fertilizer Plant. Although its administrative offices and residential area are located within Golmud city, the plant itself is about 60 kilometers away from Golmud. The most spectacular sight at the plant is a reservoir that is 6 meters deep and covers an area of 3 square kilometers. The nearby potash salts are mined from here. Due to the extremely high salt content, nothing can grow in the surrounding area, creating a uniquely eerie and desolate landscape. Another point of interest is that it is one of only three similar factories in the world—the other two are located in much lower-altitude areas: Salt Lake City in the United States and the Dead Sea in Israel.
