The vast, majestic, and mysterious Kunlun Mountains have long held a prestigious status as the “Ancestor of All Mountains” in Chinese cultural history, often referred to by ancient people as the “Dragon Vein Ancestor” of China. Yuzhu Peak, whether as the highest peak in the eastern section of the Kunlun Mountains or as a 6,000-meter entry-level snow mountain in the eyes of mountaineering explorers, has always been a dream destination for countless mountaineering enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
Students from the Tsinghua University Mountaineering Team are no exception.
At 8:31 AM on July 18, five members of Team A from the Tsinghua University Student Mountaineering Team successfully summited Yuzhu Peak, which stands at 6,178 meters above sea level in Qinghai Province. Subsequently, at 8:40 AM on July 19, two members of Team B also reached the summit. Climbing Record: Successful Summit After Acclimatization Training at Assault Camp
Yuzhu Peak, also known as Keke Saijimen Peak, stands at 6,178 meters above sea level and is located at the border between the Golmud River and Yuzhu in Qinghai Province. It resembles a graceful figure standing in the eastern part of Hoh Xil, serving as the guardian deity of the region. With its low oxygen levels and demanding high-altitude acclimatization conditions, climbing Yuzhu Peak significantly enhances climbers’ ability to adapt to high altitudes, making it an excellent stepping stone for those aiming to conquer 7,000-meter and 8,000-meter peaks.
On July 12, the Tsinghua University Mountaineering Team, consisting of six men and four women, arrived in Golmud at an altitude of 2,780 meters, officially beginning their journey to summit Yuzhu Peak. They chose the traditional southern slope route, conducted high-altitude acclimatization trekking training at Budongquan at an altitude of 4,600 meters, and established two key camps during the training and rest period: the Base Camp at 5,050 meters and Assault Camp C1 at 5,600 meters.
After 3–4 days of acclimatization training and rest, on July 18 and 19, the team members attempted the summit in two groups. They successfully reached the 6,178-meter summit of Yuzhu Peak at 7:24 AM and 8:21 AM on July 18, and at 8:40 AM on July 19.
The stunning wildflowers of the Kunlun snow mountains, the breathtaking sight of glacial meltwater, the plateau pikas digging their burrows, the precious oxygen and signal at high altitude, and the life-and-death bonds with teammates all left a profound impression on the Tsinghua students on this journey. Some even accomplished their first snow mountain summit on Yuzhu Peak.
