Peking University Mountaineering Team’s 2014 Geladandong Peak Expedition Report Meeting  On the evening of November 14, 2014, at 7:00 PM, the “Peking University Camel Mountaineering Team 2014 Geladandong Peak Expedition Report Meeting” was grandly held in the Moonlight Hall of the Yingjie Exchange Center at Peking University. The report meeting began with the screening of a climbing documentary, recreating a genuine mountaineering experience for the attending guests and audience. The stunning shots of the snow-capped mountains and the team’s strenuous climbing efforts allowed every spectator to feel the allure of the mountains and the challenges of the ascent. Veteran team member Li Lan at the summit of Geladandong Building on recent climbing experiences and lessons learned, the Mountain Eagle Society focused its main efforts on “mountaineering training” and ultimately set its sights on Geladandong Peak, located in Tanggula Township, Golmud City, Qinghai Province, with an elevation of 6,621 meters. The Geladandong mountain range stretches 50 kilometers from north to south and about 20 kilometers from east to west, covering an icy area of 670 square kilometers. It is surrounded by over 40 modern glaciers and features more than 20 peaks exceeding 6,000 meters in height. The Jianggudiru Glacier, the largest valley glacier on the southwestern side of Geladandong, spans 12.8 kilometers in length and terminates at an altitude of 5,359 meters, serving as the source of China’s longest river—the Yangtze River. The base camp was located in the Gariqu River Valley, surrounded by lush vegetation, with the glacier terminus of Geladandong at its end Prayer flags and prayer stones set against the backdrop of a misty rainbow Panoramic view of the eastern side of Geladandong Due to a landslide, the traditional route (northwest ridge) of this peak proved more technically challenging than the climbing team had anticipated. The section from the gear change point to C1 was covered with broken ice, the route from C1 to C2 featured large snow slopes interspersed with a few crevasses, and the terrain above C2 was steep, with one section reaching a 70-degree ice-and-snow slope. This complex topography was ideal for student teams to enhance their comprehensive technical skills during independent climbing. The slowly advancing team Climbing team captain Zhao Wanrong pioneering halfway up the 70-degree slope Meltwater gullies densely covering the glacier In August 1994, Peking University Mountain Eagle Society’s climbing team successfully reached the summit of Geladandong Peak, becoming the first group of Chinese people to achieve the first ascent of a snow peak at the source of the Yangtze River. On July 20, 2014, the final group of team members successfully summited. Twenty years later, the Mountain Eagle Society’s river-tracing expedition concluded almost perfectly, with 17 members reaching the summit and 2 ascending to over 6,000 meters in elevation. The entire climbing operation lasted a full month, from departure from Beijing on June 27 to return on July 27. This climb continued the Mountain Eagle Society’s tradition of independent climbing. Throughout the process, prioritizing safety, the team members enriched their snowy mountain experience, broadened their horizons, and fulfilled the original intention of “supporting growth” through student mountaineering training. The team also adhered to a zero-tolerance environmental approach to climbing, giving university mountaineering activities new meaning. At the report meeting, all climbing team members sang the team song “The World Is in My Heart” together The report meeting invited Mr. Wan Guangyu, General Manager of Guangdong Camel Clothing Co., Ltd., Ms. Chen Jing, Assistant to the Headquarters of SALEWA (Salewa), Mr. Zhang ShanHong, Representative of Jinyu Tianhe, Wu Hao, Deputy Director of the Physical Education Teaching and Research Section at Peking University, Wang Yiming, Deputy Secretary of the Peking University Youth League Committee, Shi Changyi, Head of the Student Organizations Department of the Peking University Youth League Committee, and Qian Junwei, Director of the Mass Sports Office of the Physical Education Teaching and Research Section at Peking University and instructor of the Mountain Eagle Society. Also present were representatives from multiple media outlets and various sister universities’ clubs. Wang Yiming, Deputy Secretary of the Peking University Youth League Committee, delivered the opening speech. He shared his impressions after watching the video, fully affirming the exemplary role of the Peking University Mountain Eagle Society among student organizations, emphasizing the importance of early preparation and physical training, expressing his concerns regarding safety issues, and setting higher expectations for the future development of the Mountain Eagle Society. Wu Hao, Deputy Director of the Physical Education Teaching and Research Section at Peking University, spoke next, highly praising the enduring spirit of the Mountain Eagle passed down through generations within the society. He expressed strong understanding and care for the growth and development of the Mountain Eagle Society. From 1989 to 2014, over 25 years, the support from the university and the Youth League Committee has been a solid backing for the growth of the Mountain Eagle Society. Subsequently, Zhang Mohan, captain of this Camel Mountaineering Team and former president of the Mountain Eagle Society, summarized the entire mountaineering activity, outlining the preparatory work beforehand and the arrangements throughout the climb. Climbing team captain Zhao Wanrong provided a professional and detailed technical summary of the climbing process, covering aspects such as the climbing route and schedule. He particularly emphasized the changes in the route in recent years and future trends, offering valuable experience for future climbs on Geladandong Peak. Ms. Chen Jing, Assistant to the Headquarters of SALEWA (Salewa), pointed out in her speech that while conducting its own activities, the Mountain Eagle Society has also been tirelessly promoting the development of outdoor sports and civilian mountaineering, which gives university mountaineering and outdoor activities deeper significance. She hoped that SALEWA’s equipment support would help the Mountain Eagles soar even higher. Mr. Wan Guangyu, General Manager of Guangdong Camel Clothing Co., Ltd., also expressed his affirmation and support for the Mountain Eagle Society in his subsequent speech and conveyed his optimistic vision for the society’s future mountaineering activities. He looked forward to further deepening cooperation in the future to jointly contribute to the development of China’s outdoor industry.
