Liu Hulan Memorial Hall
The Liu Hulan Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.
The Liu Hulan Memorial Hall is located south of Liu Hulan Village in Wenshui County, Shanxi Province, bordering the Fen River to the east and connecting to the Tai-Fen Highway to the west. The memorial hall was first built in 1956, with a total construction area of 8,400 square meters. It was completed and opened to the public in 1957 on the 10th anniversary of the martyrdom of Liu Hulan, becoming an excellent educational site for instilling revolutionary traditions among youths nationwide.
The memorial hall covers a total construction area of 60,000 square meters, with a symmetrical layout centered around the memorial monument and the tomb. Upon entering the gate, the first thing you see is a spacious square, with a tall white marble memorial monument standing in the center of the flower beds. On the front of the monument is the handwritten inscription by Comrade Mao Zedong: “A great life, a glorious death.”
On the back of the monument is engraved the “Decision of the Jin-Sui Sub-Bureau of the Central Committee on Posthumously Recognizing Comrade Liu Hulan as a Full Member of the Communist Party of China.” Behind the monument is a trough-shaped building covering nearly 3,000 square meters, with a plaque inscribed “Liu Hulan Memorial Hall” by Guo Moruo hanging from the central pillar of the front railing. The torches surrounding the building symbolize the confidence and determination of the Chinese people to “carry forward the spirit of Hulan and dedicate themselves to the Four Modernizations.”
Inside the memorial hall’s main hall are displayed 74 personal belongings of the martyr, along with paintings, sculptures, photographs, documentary materials depicting Liu Hulan’s life and deeds, and handwritten inscriptions in her honor.
Behind the hall lies the tomb, where the martyr’s remains are buried on the high platform at the front. The platform is surrounded by lush pines and cypresses, with green grass covering the grave. In front of the grave stands an 8-meter-tall white marble statue that vividly recreates Liu Hulan’s heroic image in her lifetime, evoking deep reverence.
To the west of the statue is the stele pavilion, and under the “Tree of Life and Death” to the east is the site where Liu Hulan was arrested. The Guanyin Temple is where she was tried, and the stone-carved wreath marks the site of her execution.
