Shangxian Site (First Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Sites)

Era: Neolithic

Location: 9 km south of Wenshui County, Shangxian Village

The site covers a relatively large area, extending east to the earthen slope on the west side of the Taijun Highway, west to the top of Shangxian Ridge, north to the boundary ditch of Macun, and south to the southern part of Shangxian Village, spanning an area of 20,000 square kilometers. The site lies 60 cm beneath the surface, with a cultural layer about 2–3 cm thick, representing a Neolithic cultural relic. The stratigraphic cross-section of the site features multiple ash pits, and the ground is scattered with cord-marked gray pottery shards. Collected artifacts include stone axes, stone scrapers, pottery li tripods, gray pottery shards, and red pottery shards. The eastern part of the site mostly consists of ash pits, where two pottery kiln sites were discovered. The western part is a hilly area with remains of cave dwellings.
