Originally built in the 13th year of the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, it was bestowed the name "Lingquan Temple" by imperial decree during the Dading era of the Jin Dynasty. It was destroyed by fire during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, rebuilt in the Jiaqing era, and renovated in the Daoguang era.

The temple complex faces south, measuring 99.3 meters in length and 42.6 meters in width, with a total area of 8,860 square meters. It is divided into inner and outer sections. The inner section includes structures such as the Mahavira Hall, Ten Kings of Hell Hall, Three Sages Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Scripture Depository Hall.

The outer section consists of four courtyards, including the Yuanshen Hall, Guanyin Hall, Shengjing Hall, Eyewitness Temple, Huoshen Temple, Wenchang Temple, Five-Bay Ancestral Hall, and Wooden Memorial Archway.

To the west and south of the temple are over 600 stupas dating from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
