Tuanshan Ancient Residences is located in Tuanshan Village, Xizhuang Town, Jianshui County, about 13 kilometers from the county seat. It is one of Jianshui’s historical and cultural heritage sites.

The founding ancestor of the Zhang family in Tuanshan migrated to Yunnan through trade from Poyang County, Raozhou Prefecture, Jiangxi Province during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1390–1406), eventually settling in Tuanshan and gradually developing into a prominent clan. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, a group of villagers left home to work in the mining industry in Gejiu. After earning money, they returned to build luxurious residences as a way to bring honor to their ancestors and elevate the family's status. Today, there are 15 well-preserved traditional residences and 7 ancient structures, including 3 village gates, 3 temples, and 1 ancestral hall. The total area covers 18,384.5 square meters, with a built-up area of 16,158 square meters. The residential complex features a diverse array of architectural styles in terms of layout, size, and scale. However, all of them showcase the distinctive characteristics of southern Yunnan residential architecture through their regular forms, flexible layouts, rich spatial arrangements, and elegant exteriors with exquisite interiors. These residences are adorned with wood carvings, brick carvings, and stone carvings, which are found on beams, brackets, window and door panels, spandrels, lintels, carved bricks, stone vats, column bases, and Sumeru pedestal carvings, among other structural elements. The carvings vary widely in form, pattern, and style, all demonstrating intricate craftsmanship and unique aesthetics. Paintings and calligraphy also constitute a major decorative feature of Tuanshan Ancient Residences. According to statistics, the residences contain a total of 5,594 pieces of calligraphy and paintings—2,977 calligraphic works and 2,617 paintings. The collection features a comprehensive range of scripts, vibrant painting styles, rich content, meticulous compositions, lively yet concise expressions, and flexible layouts.

With its exquisite wood carving craftsmanship and folk decorative art, Tuanshan Ancient Residences exemplifies the defining features of southern Yunnan residential architecture. It bears witness to the lives and work of the people in the region and stands as a masterpiece—and the essence—of southern Yunnan's residential buildings. Its value is not only recognized in Yunnan but also enjoys high renown across China.

In September 1990, two structures within the Tuanshan Ancient Residences complex—"Dacheng Temple" and "Zhang Family Garden"—were designated as part of the third batch of cultural relic protection units in Jianshui County. In February 2003, the entire Tuanshan Ancient Residences complex (including 13 sites such as "Dacheng Temple" and "Zhang Family Garden") was listed as part of the fourth batch of prefectural-level cultural relic protection units. In December 2003, the Tuanshan Ancient Residences were designated as part of the sixth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.
